Colchester Zoo

Colchester Zoo is one of the biggest zoos in the UK and is home to more than 260 species from all over the world.

Set in 60 acres of parkland, Colchester Zoo is the perfect place to meet your favourite animals while surrounded by beautiful scenery. The zoo offers lots of interactive activities which will delight you and the kids from watching the penguins being fed to clever animals being trained.

Elephant Kingdom

One of Colchester Zoo’s most impressive enclosures. The four elephants can be viewed in their large outdoor paddock area, which has a pool area and a waterfall, which they tend to enjoy in the warmer months.

Feathers of the Forest

This walkthrough exhibit houses the amazing Victoria crowned pigeon and the Crested wood partridge. Visitors can journey through the walkthrough, with the chance to see the birds up close and enjoy the vibrant colours of these beautiful birds.

Edge of Africa

Here you will find cheetah’s, spotted hyena’s, mandrills, red river hogs, warthogs and other smaller African species.

Bears of the Rising Sun

These two sun bears arrived at Colchester Zoo in September 2010. Both bears were confiscated by Government Anti-Poaching Patrols in Cambodia in 2007 and 2008 respectively. Jo-Jo and Srey Ya have a large outdoor area for them to explore, along with an indoor area consisting of a waterfall and climbing frames for enrichment. Both the indoor and outdoor areas for our sun bears have public viewing areas, but Jo-Jo and Srey Ya also have the opportunity to retire to their own private, off show, sleeping quarters.

Kingdom of the Wild

Here you will get to see reticulated giraffes, maneless zebras, white rhino, ostriches and greater kudu mixing together in the main paddock which has been recreated as a Savannah environment. The inside area houses pygmy hippos, a variety of reptiles, invertebrates and fish species. There is also a lovely view from the balcony overlooking the outdoor paddock. This is the perfect place to sit, relax and watch the African species.

Inca Trail

Inca Trail is home to a large group of Humboldt penguins. You can also spot one of the Saki monkey groups at the top of the enclosure, near the upper viewing platform. All penguins have individual patterns of spots on their chest and their own characters, which is how they can identify them.

Walking Giants

Home to the Aldabra giant and African spurred tortoises, which are two of the four biggest tortoise species in the world! Their home consists of both an indoor area for those chilly days and an large outdoor area for when the weather is warm, as they enjoy soaking up the sun.
