Inside Highclere Castle

Highclere Castle & Egyptian Exhibition

Highclere is one of England's most beautiful Victorian Castles set amidst 1,000 acres of spectacular Parkland and is the film location of ITV1's Downton Abbey.

Highclere Castle has been home to the Carnarvon family since 1679. Built on an ancient site, the original house was recorded in the Domesday Book.

The present day Castle was designed in 1842 by Sir Charles Barry, the architect also responsible for building the Houses of Parliament in Westminster.

Egyptian Exhibition:

The Castle was the seat, 100 years ago, of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who famously discovered the Tomb of the Egyptian Boy Pharaoh, Tutankhamun, in 1922 with his archaeological colleague, Howard Carter. Today, the 8th Earl and Countess have opened a new Egyptian Exhibition throughout the cellars of the Castle to celebrate the 5th Earl's achievements.

  • There is approx. 150-yards to walk from the coach drop-off to the Castle entrance

  • Regretfully Highclere are unable to allow motorised wheelchairs/scooters inside the Castle. There is access for manual wheelchairs to the State Rooms with the exception of the Morning Room, the Galleried Landing and Bedrooms. Instead there is a photograph album featuring these rooms available in the Saloon on the ground floor. The Exhibition, Tea Rooms and Gift Shop are wheelchair accessible. The gardens are accessed by gravel paths of lawns and there are some inclines.
