Mail Rail 35 © The Postal Museum, Miles Willis

The Postal Museum, London

Ride through the tunnels of Mail Rail and explore galleries of incredible history. For more than 75 years, it was a vital artery in Britain’s communication network, hidden from view. Experience it for yourself.

Across from the Postal Museum is the Mail Rail, take a ride on Mail Rail and experience 15 minutes of immersive underground exploration on their miniature trains. Descend into the former engineering depot of Mail Rail – the one hundred year old Post Office railway and descend into the stalactite-filled tunnels.

Pass deep below Royal Mail’s Mount Pleasant sorting office, see the original and largely unchanged station platforms and be transported back in time. Take in a theatrical experience that peels back the layers of time to the railway’s lively 1930s heyday. See and hear the people who worked on it, experience their lives below ground and glimpse hidden parts of the railway that kept the mail coursing through London for 22 hours every day.

Essential Information

The historical nature of Mail Rail and the evacuation procedure means that riding the Mail Rail is not suitable for all visitors. Please read the information below to ensure the ride is suitable for you before booking a ticket.

  • In the event of an emergency evacuation guests must be able to walk unaided for a minimum of 100 metres on uneven surfaces with minimal lighting, and up at least 70 steep steps. Visitors who do not meet these requirements will be unable to ride.

  • Visitors must be able to enter and exit the carriages independently.

  • The audio-visual shows projected onto the platform walls during the ride contain flashing lights and would not be suitable for those with photo-sensitive epilepsy.

  • There is no option to exit once the ride has begun and it will last approximately 15 minutes.

  • The Mail Rail ride is a loud, highly visually stimulating experience, so would not be suitable for those who may find this distressing.

  • The carriages are small and some of the tunnels are very narrow; this may be unsuitable or uncomfortable for visitors sensitive to small, confined spaces.

  • Visitors sensitive to darkness may find the experience distressing.

  • The tunnels can smell of damp and it can smell stronger at specific points of the ride.

  • Guests must be able to transfer themselves onto the ride, leaving any aides in the storage provided next to the platform where visitors will both board and disembark.

  • No loose items, including handbags, are permitted on the ride. Items must be left in the cages provided or in a locker. The Postal Museum do not accept any responsibility for loss, theft or damage to personal items.

  • Visitors of all ages can ride, but children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 18.
